Today I Helped Someone

This is a big deal. I wanted to work where I work because I wanted to "help people" (such a generic criterion, but it be what it be and It Be True.)

As you may know, my work is not as help-centric as I would have anticipated, and consists mostly of revering bigwigs, returning calls to whiners, and drafting items that get scrapped and all with a greater design to make me feel worthless.

But TODAY.: Today I Helped Someone. (at least I hope I did). A kid in a bad situation. A young man who needs some guidance. And I think I provided that to him. I think he will be better off because of something I did.

Probably the first time in a year+ that I've done something for someone that matters. Something that could actually make a difference in a life. It's amazing what an impact such a teeny tiny little conversation can have on perspective. And how it can, by comparison, identify exactly why I'm often afflicted with large doses of self-pity and feelings of inadequacy (not like Smilin' Bob, but his problems are important, too). I need to do more meaningful work. How? Where? When? Help!

Fingers crossed that I'll find more ways to do things that actually matter.

  1. Maybe you can start volunteering once a week? Keep the job but help someone at the same time :)
