In 2010, I lived in Memphis TN (which was the result of one distinct moment). I had just accepted a job "back home" in Columbus (another moment I could discuss), and moved home in October 2010. Shortly after I returned home, I went to a party- an annual Halloween/birthday party that I'd been to in the past. I walked in and no one recognized me- I had colored my hair (another moment), lost quite a few pounds (a result of being poor and friendless in Memphis), and besides, I rarely saw these people.
Once a year I went to this birthday/Halloween party with girls I knew from college. I knew no one well, because these girls had been seniors when I was a freshman, and our life paths never aligned very easily. But at the party in 2010, I had a life-turning moment. The hosts were dressed as shamrocks, home-brewed beer was served, and at some point during the evening, while I was enjoying all the chaos and silliness, I asked them "will you invite me to more stuff with you?"
I liked them. I always had, but being full-fledged, call you when I'm sad, celebrate with you when I'm happy, love your family, late nights, inside jokes had never really been in the cards. Finally, FINALLY we were all out of college, all living in the same city and I wanted in!
Will these two kill me for sharing this? |
Making my desire to spend more time together known really changed things for me. These are now my closest friends- we've gone on many trips together, spent many weeknights sipping wine, supporting one another when the going gets rough, and when it gets rougher, affirming our greatness and sharing good news and being the "go-to-woo-crew". It could have come off like a desperate middle schooler: "I like you, will you be my friend?", but they took it seriously and started including me in the group. If not for that, who would I spend my time? Who would I call for...whatever? It's a mystery, but not one I'll investigate too much, because my friends are awesome. Duh.
